Joining the DIS
What are the roles available as a woman in DIS?
All vocations in the DIS are open to women. Get in touch with the DIS Recruitment Centre (discareers@defence.gov.sg) about your professional certifications or to find out what forms of certifications the DIS would sponsor, should you join us.
Can I join the DIS if I do not have any prior knowledge and experience?
Yes, you will undergo the requisite training to pick up the requisite skills, including your academic reading in University. Importantly, we are looking for someone who has the interest and aptitude to pursue a career in the digital domain.
As a mid-careerist, can I transition into senior roles in the DIS?
Yes, with relevant work experience, a mid-careerist may be able to transition into senior roles in the DIS. This applies to both military and non-military roles.
Working environment in the DIS
What is the work environment like?
DIS work is largely indoors, but do expect some outdoor elements, such as manning or visiting remote operations sites, physical trainings, supporting DIS and SAF exercises, etc. These are subject to job rotations and appointments.
Will I be the only female in a male-dominated work environment?
It is unlikely that you will find yourself as the only woman in your unit or department. We have a sizable number of women at every physical camp/base where DIS entities are located.
Are women fairly represented in the leadership positions?
Yes, opportunities, recognition and leadership positions are given on the basis of merit and suitability.
Learning and growth in the DIS
What skills will I gain in the DIS?
The DIS offers a wide range of diverse skillsets, which includes professionally-certified skills that are internationally recognised. We also provide sponsorship for part-time and full-time post-graduate studies, subject to management’s approval.
Does the job provide mentoring and/or coaching?
Yes, we have a mentoring scheme that seeks to pair you with a suitable mentor to journey with you through each phase of your career.
Families and the DIS
How does the DIS support families?
Families play an integral part in supporting our servicewomen. As with the rest of the SAF, the DIS provisions for maternity/paternity leave, childcare leave, and parent care leave, as well as medical and welfare benefits. If certain personnel feel that their jobs pose great challenges to family life or parenthood, the DIS is prepared to consider rotating personnel into posts that will allow them to find a better balance for their individual needs on a case-by-case basis.
I am expecting now, can I apply?
Yes, your application will be based on your qualifications and your pregnancy will not affect it. Training and course requirements can be deferred to accommodate your needs.
Will pregnancy affect my performance assessment?
No. As with the rest of the SAF, policies are in place to ensure a fair assessment is made based on performance. If personnel feel that certain jobs are incompatible with pregnancy and post-partum, the DIS is prepared to consider rotating personnel into posts that will allow them to meet their needs, on a case-by-case basis.
